Water Line Replacement – South Aloha
The tract subdivisions south of TV Highway were built through the 1970s and 1980s — a range that covers two different water line eras. Older South Aloha homes from the 1970s have galvanized steel service lines that have been corroding from the inside for close to 50 years. Homes from the 1980s moved to copper, which holds up better but is now in the window where soft Pacific Northwest water can cause pinhole corrosion. Either way, when a South Aloha water line reaches the end of its run, we replace it with PEX built to last the next 50 years.
Two Eras, Two Failure Modes
Galvanized steel service lines from South Aloha's 1970s homes corrode from the inside outward. Rust and mineral scale accumulate on the interior pipe wall year by year, narrowing the opening and gradually dropping pressure. By the time orange morning water appears, the pipe has typically been in active corrosion decline for a long time — the slowness of the process masks how far along it is.
Copper lines from the 1980s don't corrode in the same way, but the soft, slightly acidic water throughout the Portland area causes pitting corrosion in copper over time. Pits deepen into pinhole leaks, which often show up underground in the service line before they're visible anywhere inside the house. An unexplained water bill increase or a soft wet patch in the yard over the line route are the typical first signs.
Aging Galvanized vs. New PEX
Aging Galvanized Steel Line
- Corrodes from inside → rust in water
- Interior narrows over decades → low pressure
- 45–50 years old in 1970s South Aloha homes
- No repair option once corrosion is advanced
- Replacement is the only lasting fix
New PEX Service Line
- Corrosion-resistant — no rust, no narrowing
- Unaffected by soft water chemistry
- Full pressure maintained for 50+ years
- Flexible — handles soil shift and root pressure
- Clean water from day one
Signs Your Water Line Needs Replacing
- Orange or rust-tinted water, especially the first draw of the morning
- Water pressure lower than it used to be at multiple fixtures
- Unexplained increase in the monthly water bill
- Wet, soft, or unusually green area in the yard over the line route
- Sound of water running when all fixtures are off
- Home built before 1985 with no record of water line replacement
Directional Drilling on Standard South Aloha Lots
Flat, standard-width lots in the South Aloha tract subdivisions are straightforward for directional drilling. A Ditch Witch boring machine pulls the new PEX line underground between the meter and the house without opening a continuous trench. Driveways stay intact, trees and shrubs along the route aren't disrupted, and the yard is largely undisturbed when we're done. Where soil conditions or routing require traditional excavation instead — which does happen on some properties — we explain why before we start and walk you through what the work involves.
- Directional drilling where lot and soil allow — driveway and landscaping protected
- Traditional excavation when routing requires it
- New PEX service line rated 50+ years
- Washington County permit handled
- Water restored before we leave
- Most jobs completed in one day
Frequently Asked Questions
My pressure has been gradually dropping for years. Is that the line?
In a South Aloha home from the 1970s, gradual pressure loss over years is almost always galvanized service line corrosion narrowing the interior of the pipe. The process is slow enough that homeowners adjust without realizing the pipe is the cause. A plumber can confirm the material and condition quickly — and if it's galvanized at this age, replacement is the answer.
My 1984 home has copper lines. Do those need replacing?
Copper from the early-to-mid 1980s is 40-plus years old. If the line has no history of problems and pressure is good, it may still have years of service life. If you're seeing unexplained bill increases or soft yard patches, it's worth having the line assessed. We'll give you an honest read on whether repair or replacement is the right call for your specific situation.
How long does the replacement take?
Most South Aloha water line replacements are completed in one day. Water is restored before we leave.
